| 内容記述 | OGURA Suyeko (1891-1944), a foremost Japanese pianist in the Taisho and the early Showa periods but now almost in oblivion, deserves more attention. She graduated in music from Kobe College in March 1910, before further study of a half year at Tokyo School of Music and approximately two years (1912-1914) at Musikhochshule Berlin. Her successful subsequent activities as a pianist and a teacher in the United States was followed by Tokyo School of Music's appointment of her as a piano lecturer in 1916 and a professor in the following year. Thereafter, she remained vigorous in performance and teaching for more than a quarter of a century. This paper is a first report of my attempt to make clear her activities as a musician by checking articles written on her in the YOMIURI Newspaper. In the CD-ROM version of the YOMIURI, there are 68 hits for the name of OGURA Suyeko (or Suye) between 1911 and 1944. They include 21 articles containing her photos. She is referred to eleven times in 1916, the year of her return home to Japan after four years of absence, eight times in 1922, when her variegated activities were prominent, and five times in 1926, when her new expensive piano as well as her piano recital in the Teikoku Theatre attracted people's attention. These references tell us that 1) Ogura got media attention in the very first year of her study at Tokyo School of Music, 2)she was in the spotlight in the Taisho period, 3) in the Showa period she kept active through the new media, radio broadcasting, 4) Tokyo School of Music and Ongaku Shoreikai were the main institutions for her activity, and 5) she gained both general esteem and partial criticism for her transcendent interpretation and aloof personality. These facts are expected to provide a basis for a positive reappraisal of Ogura in the near future. | |||||||||||
