The Yushima Mausoleum,however,was nothing other than a private institution founded by the Hayashi family,though it was dignified with Shogun's support and worship. The Shogun's government did not have its own educational institution in Yedo. Moreover,Tsunayoshi's encouragement of Confucian study was so fanatical that it exhausted his attendants' patience,as well as that of himself. So that,when Tokugawa-Yoshimune,the eighth Shogun,opened the lecture in the Mausoleum to the public,it s audience was quite small,among them Shogun's retainers being especially few.
