Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner and \"Kubla Khan.\" Dillard compares her irresistible impulse to communicate her experiences of intricate mysterious beauty at Tinker Creek to others, with that of the Mariner teaching his tale to the Wedding Guest. Dillard also identifies herself with \"I\" the poet, in \"Kubla Khan, \" who tries to explain a vision of Kubla's miraculous pleasure-dome he saw in his dream.
