First, we examine the case of a man who cross‒dressed as a substitute for a shrine maiden to perform dengaku. The cross‒dressing was used as a means to enhance the effect of prayer, and the purpose was not to entertain. Second, in all instances of cross‒dressing at sake banquets and festivals, the cross‒dressers and spectators shared the\"entertainment\"with each other equally, as they chose cross‒dressing as a \"furyu\"(a style of entertainment) on their own initiative and voluntarily.\nIn this way, male cross‒dressing is an activity to share the entertainment of \"furyu\"and maintain and strengthen human relationships based on relatively equal relationships. However, female cross‒dressing is an asymmetrical \"furyu\"that focuses on serving the entertainment of the audience, especially the male audiences. These differences exist in the social positioning and function between men’s and women’s cross‒dressing in the medieval performing arts.
