In this study, the enthalpy change ΔH, Gibbs energychange ΔG, entropy change ΔS, and equilibrium constants K for the isomerization reactions of butenes C4H8(1-butene ⇄ 2-metylpropene, 1-butene ⇄ trans-2-butene, cis-2-butene ⇄ 2-methylpropene, and cis-2-butene⇄ trans-2-butene) under standard conditions (298. 15 K, 10 5Pa) were calculated and physicochemical properties on these reactions were discussed. It has suggested that the reaction in which 1-butene is isomerized to 2-methylpropene is irreversible, both 1-butene to trans-2-butene and cis-2-butene to 2-methylpropene arealmost irreversible, and cis-2-butene to trans-2-butene is reversible. The relationship between Gibbs energy change without considering the effect of mixing ΔGo and the extent of reaction at chemical equilibrium αe is investigated, and it has found that if ΔGo is less than -13 kJ-mol-1, then αe ≈ 1 mol and the reaction is irreversible with almost complete progress.
