| 内容記述 | 本稿はRaymond Williams（レイモンド・ウィリアムズ）のモダニズム論をもとに、ハーレム・ルネサンスをアフリカ系アメリカ人のモダニズム文学として分析する。批評家レイモンド・ウィリアムズは、モダニズムを画一的に解釈するのではなく、当時メトロポリスに集まった周縁の人々の貢献を評価するべきと主張している。20世紀の初頭、ニューヨークのハーレムに様々な場所からやってきた作家たちは、自らの表象の可能性を模索した。論文では、ハーレム・ルネサンスの主要作家であるNella Larsen（ネラ・ラーセン）のPassing (1929）を取りあげ、その中で境界線を越えた人々の移動がいかに表象されているか、作品の中で提示されている二分法的な人種観の批判を分析し、アフリカ系アメリカ人のモダニズムの一例を提示する。 | |||||||

| 内容記述 | Referring to modernist theory suggested by Raymond Williams, this study analyzes the Harlem Renaissance as African American modernism. As a critic, Williams claims that modernism cannot be interpreted in a simplistic and uniform manner. According to him, modernism was a contribution of the marginalized people in the metropolis. At the beginning of the 20th century, various artists and writers migrated to Harlem, New York,and explored new ways of representing themselves. With this background, the study discusses Nella Larsen’s Passing. Presenting Larsen’s work as an example of African American modernism, this study analyzes how Larsen represents people’s migration and boundary crossings, and her criticism of the dichotomy of racial category. | |||||||
