Vision of the Mermaids\" を執筆した。本稿では、後の作品と異なるこの初期の詩に焦点を当て、詩人ホプキンズの印象と主観性に対する意識を、ペイターの印象主義やコールリッジの想像力説の影響と絡めて考察することにより、\"vision\" (幻覚)としての人魚の描写を解釈する。\"A Visoin of the Mermaids\" において、「私」の視点から流動する客体が描写されているが、これは主体の想像力の働きによるものであり、The Renaissance におけるペイターの印象主義に見られる流動性は、Biographia Literaria におけるコールリッジの想像力の定義と一致する。想像力は主体の作用であり、流動的な印象となるが、これに対し、空想は客体の固定制と関連し、自我や主観は排除される。\"A Vision of the Mermaids\" を創作した時点では、ホプキンズはロマン主義的な想像力で主観的・流動的にしか客体をとらえることができておらず、主体である「私」の悲しみは、ロマン主義の影響から逃れられない詩人ホプキンズの悲しみ・葛藤をも表していると考えられる。ホプキンズにとって詩は神とつながる手段であった。彼は英国国教会からローマ・カトリックに改宗し、イエズス会に入会した1863年以降、自我と主観を排除した詩学である空想をその詩語として採用する。しかし、\"A Vision of the Mermaids\" においては、ホプキンズはまだこのような見解にたどり着いていないのである。さらに、人間の想像上の産物としての人魚は、ホプキンズの想像の問題にとどまらず、\"A Vision of the
