However, it has been reported,in his life and attitudes he was interested in the female sex and some women he ever met. In fact, we know his legendary episodes about women and we can read in his works, poetry or fairy tales,some female characters. In this essay, I discuss Miss Helen Topping, whose father once taught the Bible and English to Kenji in his school days. The poem "Iwate Park"suggests that Kenji had association with the Toppings. And Helen, according to some source, was a model of the girl in "Malibran and a Girl"."Malibran and a Girl"is a version of "A Blind Grape and a Rainbow."The latter's`grape'is changed into the former's`girl',the latter's`rainbow' into`Malibran': natural personifications into human figures. Like Helen, the`girl'is a daughter of a pastor who is going to Africa on his mission. The characters of `a blind grape' and`a girl' are outstanding for their sincere longing for someone else deserving of their respect and devotion. We can recognise in `a girl' a passion for devotion like Helen. Helen helped Toyohiko Kagawa as his secretary and interpreter. It is a wonder that there once was a woman who linked Kenji to Kagawa spiritually in spite of their spatial distance.}, pages = {1--12}, title = {賢治と「女性」(I)}, volume = {3}, year = {1989}, yomi = {ハマシタ, マサヒロ} }
