Describing the inside of a girls' school through everyday conversations, it satirized the \"civilized\" upper class. The next year, a longer and more serious novel by another young girl was written as a series in a leading newspaper. Its heroine ran away from home and went to Britain and America. After coming back to Japan, she realized her dream of founding an ideal factory where poor women could work in better conditions than prevailed at the time. Though the two writers show a sharp contrast both in their lives and works, they shared a common attitude against \"over-westernization\"and womens' independence. However, it brought a contradiction in society. The nationalists, the newspapers, and the government began to ask for the revival of the \"traditional\"female virtues, not their independence. A group of young teachers, nevertheless, were free from this \"reaction.\" Led by liberal Christians, they admired art and \"love,\"published a literary magazine, Bungakukai, and inspired young readers with European romanticism. It was through their influence that some girls' school graduates appeared in society as fresh writers.
