Why did he stick to literary language and elaborate style towards the end of his life? As an approach to this question,I will compare his earlier poems in colloquial,informal style with these elaborate ones,focusing on those with a theme of womanhood. I find that the latter poems in literary style are generally shorter than those in colloquial style. The latter poems are mostly produced through abstraction from the earlier concrete poems. As a result of abstraction,he was successful in presenting more suggestive poems,for the images of woman are almostalways turned into archetypal images rather than mere generalisations or universalisations of womanhood.
