As Ms. Baker served United States Senate for 18 years, being a first woman elected in the Senate, she held influential seats on several leading committees and was a chair of Subcommittee of African Affairs, Subcommittee of Aviation and the Labor and Human Resources Committee. She, herself went through all these changes and by referring to her career, she talked to the audience to select the priority in life, and prepare oneself for what may come up next. She put much emphasis on the importance of education, especially for young people, which would never be wasted whatever position the woman may be at present. She cited the value of liberal arts education of Kobe College, which provides much variety of choice for the students and leaves an ample room to be developed by them in the future. She suggested the audience to participate in the activity in the society with knowledge, however small the issue might be, which will eventually lead to the change in society. She concluded her talk by referring to Hamlet by Shakespeare, "We know what we are, but not know what we may be." There followed an active question and answer session for forty minutes. She elaborated her points by stating her job in details as a Senator. As the audience was very much interested in the coming up Presidential election, she an-swered some of the basic issues people would have an interest in and the way the campaign goes. She explained her personal view on Japan's role in the international arena in relation to the possibility of Japan's permanent membership to the Security Council of the United Nations. It is the young generation, after all, who will state what we need and want, and go through change in the society.}, pages = {115--163}, title = {Ms. Nancy Landon Kassebaum Baker,駐日アメリカ大使夫人特別講演 : Challenge of Change(<特集>異文化とジェンダー)}, volume = {19}, year = {2005}, yomi = {マツナワ, ジュンコ} }
