Domestic manufacture also of the needle indispensable to needlework was carried out in Kyoto. Moreover, needle was imported in large quantities by Nagasaki and Ryukyu from China. When the Meiji period came, needlework came to be taken in by the educational system for a woman's school attendance promotion.
