During this period, Korea was under the colonial rule of Japan, which restricted various activities of movies. However, despite such difficult situations, many outstanding screenplays were produced, and actresses splendidly played their roles. At the same time, they symbolized ordinary women's agonies by playing the roles of modern women. The social roles of the actresses in Korea during this era and how they were perceived by Korean modern society are described. In modern Korea, women were struggling not only with discrimination against women (originating in Confucianism), but also with racial discrimination (originating in colonialism). However,women's advance into Korean society started with its modernization during this era.
