During the postwar years of high economic growth, however, the spred of television and the diversification of popular amusements resulted in the decline of jishibai and rural stages. Most jishibai performances were discontinued and many rural stages were demolished. In the first chapter of this paper,the materials from research on rural stages that began in the 1960's and lasted thirty years are reviewed. In the second chapter, the historical change of Takamuro Shibai and Banshu Kabuki are investigated. The troupes of Takamuro Shibai played an active part in the rural kabuki performances in Harima Province (present day Hyogo Prefecture) from the late Edo Period to the Taisho period, but all of them disbanded by the tenth year of Showa.
