The Izushi district was not included in the route of the San-in Main Line that was opened in the late Meiji period, and did not develop into a modern local city. However, as the historical townscape has been well preserved in Izushi castle town, it is highly regarded as a tasteful \"little Kyoto in Tajima\". From the 1960s, the inhabitants of Izushi-cho reconstructed \"Sumiyagura\"of the ruined Izushi Castle and improved the historical townscape; this has been called tourism-based community development. In the mid-1990s, about one million people per year visited the small castle town in Izushi. In addition, Izushi Eirakukan, which is the oldest make-shift playhouse (Shibaigoya)in the Kinki region, was renovated in 2008, and since then the \"Eirakukan Kabuki\" event has been held each autumn.
