At the same time, they begin keeping secrets from their parents and form intimate friendships among same-sex friends. Recently, it has been said that the parent-child relationship during adolescence has become like friendship. In this study, we examined the relationship between the recalled parent-child relationship and self-esteem in female adolescents. We used the Parental Bonding Instrument scale (PBI), which measured the traditional parent-child relationship, and the chumship-experience scale, which measured equal friendship. We found that as the nurturing tendency of the recalled parent-child relationship increased, the self-esteem of female adolescents increased. Additionally, when the tendency of “solidarity and sharing between mother and child” and “identification with mother” was high, the self-esteem of female adolescents increased. When female adolescents experienced a chumship relationship with their mother, which they originally experienced among same-sex friends, their self-esteem showed a higher score. The results show that female adolescents tend to have intimate relationships with their mothers during adolescence which helps maintain their mental health, although separation from their mother is avoided because they are closely attached to their mother.
