The woman called Satia (pseudonym) was diagnosed with schizophrenia and admitted to a psychiatric hospital.\n　This paper first examines the mental health situation in Sierra Leone in the context of the impact of the 1991-2002 civil war. It then reconstructs Satia’s life history from interviews with Satia and her family leading up to her admission to a psychiatric hospital, and notes her perceptions of illness and her feelings about hospitalization from her narrative. In Sierra Leone, where formal resources available to people with mental disorders are extremely scarce, family and relatives provide valuable support.
