内容記述 | 8 The intellect of man is obscured by sexual desire, says Schopenhauer,to give the name of "the fair sex"to the sex which have short statures, narrow shoulders, large hips, and short legs. He continues to say that woman is inferior to man in the fields of art and 1earning, because woman is incapable of having pure objective participation in all the things. There are other scholars who support thistheory. This theory also means the same thing with the common saying of people," Woman is subjective." Thus Shopenhauer supports that woman is "the inferior sex" and "the secondary sex."Old Greeks and Romans and Oriental nations, according to him, were right in looking woman from this view-point. So-called Dame or Lady in European countries, however,is the being which has been placed, against nature,at the same standing with man, from which various vices are caused in society. Women must be educated as housewives. 9 According to Schopenhauer, monogamy is an institution against nature which permits legal rights equally to man and woman that are substantially unequal, and as the result are caused various vices in society: spinsters and dames who eat without work in upper classes, and woman charged with improperly heavy labor and prostitutes in lower classes. Were polygamy adopted, the four undesirable species of women abovementioned would disappear. Schopenhauer's regarding the marriage institution as of convenience,-his non- recognition of morality in monogamy does agree with the view of Bernard Shaw. 10 Maternal love is instinctive, while paternal love is based upon his recognition of his own deepest self in his child and accordingly has metaphysical source. Vanity of woman tends toward flowerish material things, while that of man tends toward non-material things,s uch as comprehension, erudition, etc.Lastly he says, that woman is made by nature snbmissive is very obvious in the fact that a woman who is completely independent, that is,placed at an unnatural standing, soon begins to seek for her master who should dominate over her. Schopenhauer is here dealing with the stereotype of woman. It is quite possible that in reality some manly women exist. Therefore,a fair reader who thinks that his theory does not apply to her should be deemed as manly woman, which has its own high rai'on detre. Schopenhauer, being an eminent metaphysician, has a keen insight into the depth of "woman,"but lacksthe social-scientific recognition of woman as social and historical being. Moreover his lack of experience in marriage life, according to the author, made his recognition of "woman"fail to be full-scale. | |||||
