内容記述 | Futabatei Shimei contributed much to modern Japanese literature as a distinguished novelist who made way for a new style that unified spoken and written languages ("gen-bun icchi tai") in the Meiji era. His usages of words were so innovative that they suggested the style of light literature ("gesaku") in the Edo period. His professional career and personality are equally interesting in that he does not seem to have adjusted himself to the fashionable behavioral pattern of his time unlike most of his contemporary intellectual up-risers. It would be difficult and meaningless to ascertain the relationship between the style of writing and the personality, even though I appreciate the insightful remark by Buffon:"Le style est l'homme meme." However, it cannot be denied that his "gesaku"-like style in writing corresponds to his way of life (light-minded and self-caricaturizing style of thought and life) in one way or another. By "gesaku" I mean an attitude of self-consciousness with which to seek an appropriate self in the turmoil of the overwhelming power or change of environment that possibly leads one to the corruption of morality and the collapse of self-identity. In spite of the successful publication, Shimei never had a high opinion of his Ukigumo, and in fact he attached less importance to the social status of literature. Instead he would rather prefer business activities or political actions with both a mind of patriotic nationalist and that of vagabond adventurer, though his effort eventually failed by his death. Agony of dilemma in his mind constituted his existence reflecting a spirit of "gesaku." | |||||
