内容記述 Education in Chinese traditional theater has been changing immensely in the last century, as Chinese traditional theater, as a whole, has undergone a process of modernization. At the organizational level, this change has taken place in the form of a transition from traditional apprenticeship to modem school, and actors/actresses are now trained in highly systematic national theater schools. However, such a systematic change has not necessarily brought about improvement in their over-all performing skills. There are recognizable educational problems, the most serious one; however, is that of the transition from school to work. In this paper, I analyze the historical change in actors'/actresses' social processes of learning based on the social learning perspective. As a case study, ethnographic data from Qin Opera education in Shanxi province is presented in addition to existing historical records on the topic. The data is used in an effort to produce a more comprehensive reconstruction of the social practice dimensions of education in Chinese traditional theater. Furthermore, five different types of educational arrangements, including traditional apprenticeship and modern school, are extracted from the data that are analytically compared in terms of actors'/actresses' social processes of learning. As a result of such analysis, I wm show that a historical development of systematic educational structure, which led to the emergence of elaborate curriculums, intricate divisions of labor, and sophisticated time management, to name but a few, has produced two mutually contradictory patterns: more or less linear process of organizational systematization toward school system and paradoxical process of deterioration of over-all performing skills caused by new educational problems such as school to work transition. Finally, drawing on that result, I will attempt to define educational modernization in Chinese traditional theater as a process of intriguing dialectical interplay between these two patterns.
