内容記述 As part of our new project 'Outreach in Music' of the Music Department of Kobe College, a questionnaire survey about 'Musical Activities in Hospitals' was conducted in the summer of 2003 on 94 hospitals holding more than 200 beds within the area between Osaka and Kobe. The questionnaires were sent and collected by post. The response rate was 71.3 percent. The findings from this survey are as follows. First, 75 percent of the hospitals concerned give concerts and some musical activities to their patients, and 81 percent of them are planning to continue or increase such opportunities. Second, 65 percent of them have some musical instruments and 62 percent have a section in charge of their musical activities. Both factors are evidently contributory. Third, sites for musical events are normally hospital's waiting rooms or entrance halls, which are not designed for music but applied to it through some arrangement. Forth, main occasions of hospital concerts are Christmas, Tanabata (Japanese summer festival) and the Day of Nursing in May. 0ne third of the hospitals concerned give concerts once or twice a year, but more than one tenth of them, to my surprise, do more than once a month, or even twice a week in the most active case. Many hospitals hope to give concerts regularly, but some of them have difficulties in continuing and giving variety to their musical activities, which could be relieved with the assistance of some professionals in music. Fifth, the rate of the hospitals offering concerts are obviously related to (1) how big they are (44 percent for the hospitals with 200-299 beds, 71 percent for 300-399, 91 percent for 400-499 and 100 percent for more than 500. However it must be pointed out that some smaller hospitals are very active notwithstanding.), to (2) how publicly they are operated (prefecture, city, private), and to (3) how urbanized their location is. Musical opportunities in hospitals seem to be increasing in accordance with growing interest in the 'client service' concept. It is expected that this report of the questionnaire be of some help in furthering musical activities in hospitals.
