内容記述 | Dickens's Little Dorrit has been often discussed as the author's sharpest social critique because of its relentless disclosure and harsh criticism about the corruptive realities of the contemporary political and business worlds and of the collusive relationships between them. Dickens's elaborate satire against the Circumlocution Office and the business king Merdle is still enjoyable to today's readers. For one thing, Dickens' criticism is applicable today; it is still not unusual to see callous bureaucracy in local or national government offices or a big dishonest business go bankrupt-as we saw with Enron in 2001. For another and more pertinent reason, the novel offers a perspective to deal with the structurl ills of the capitalistic society which induces the difficulty of seeing the world and self as people living in its system. Indeed the cognitive confusion or inversion is characteristic of Little Dorrit. Many characters in the novel suffer more or less from what Rene Girard calls the self-deceptive mimetic desire which drives them to seek the superficial self representations the others want without realizing that their soul is displaced and fragmentized by the inessential self representations. In this paper, I have examined the inner problem of having this desire, especially in the grotesque figure of William Dorrit and in Merdle's followers, the Barnacles. The novel has a very close thematic organization and the author's insight makes the connection between the self-deceptive desire and the capitalistic code system. | |||||
