内容記述 | City A in western Japan is well known as providing a good educational environment and support for parents who are looking after children, and in such, has established a number of famous educational institutions. However, in recent times some problems have been identified such as lack of educational infrastructure. After the 1995 Kobe earthquake, which City A was affected by, City A has been experiencing a growth in population. There are not enough class rooms for elementary schools, so temporary prefab school buildings have been built in school grounds and classroom hallways have been used for teaching. The possibility for this situation to occur exists not only at elementary schools, but also in day care centers and kindergartens. An anonymous self-administered questionnaire was conducted at District B and C which has a large number of new apartment buildings and which is experiencing the inadequate schooling facilities outlined above. Recruitment was residents enrolled on the resident register in the survey areas. Of a total of 780 registered potential participants, questionnaires of 293 (37.6%) respondents were used for analysis. Regarding the enrolment patterns of 4 year old children, 22.5% were enrolled in public kindergartens, 56.7% in private kindergartens, 8.5% in public day care, 7.5% in private day care, 1.0% in unlicensed day care facilities, and 3.8% were looked after at home. This study of respondent who were looking after 4 years old children attending public and private kindergarten, found that respondents using public kindergartens were much more satisfied with the educational infrastructure, accountability, price of monthly tuition fee and convenience of kindergartens' location. This survey also identified other issues relating to the child rearing environment and waiting-lists for public day care issues and discussed to how improve the overall child rearing environment for kindergarten aged children. | |||||
