| 内容記述 | Concerning 11.904-920 of Sophocles' Antigone, there have been arguments on its authenticity. Some moot points which the arguments have made are the following:1) on the style,2) on the citation from Herodotus, 3) on the reference made by Aristotle in his Rhetorica,4) on the unity of Antigone's character,5) on the principles of justification which Antigone chooses. According to our interpretation, the crucial point is that we must not see her action of burying the dead without considering circumstantial conditions of her existence. From birth, Antigone was so burdened with dark destiny originated by her father Oedipus that her sympathy with her brother Polynices, with whom she deeply shared the destiny of their family, exceeded that of ordinary brother-sisterly love. Her illegal action against Creon's regulation is an existential project challenging and escaping from her destiny. Therefore, even though we may still find some inconsistency in 11.904-920, we understand her decision to act was to assert her existence, whichever justification she might prefer as her own choice. | |||||
