| 内容記述 | 本稿は女性画家パメラ・コールマン・スミス（1878-1951）と詩人「ヨネ・ノグチ」こと野口米次郎（1875-1947）の比較研究である。両者は二つの大戦を経験し、ほぼ同時代を生きた。「モダニズム」と呼ばれる時代のど真ん中を生きた世代であるが、どちらも教科書に出てくるような人物ではない。コールマンの名は「タロット画家」としてこれまでオカルト界においてのみ知られている程度で、ノグチもまた国内外においてほんの一時「国際詩人」として名を馳せた人物であった。しかしながら、二十一世紀に入り、コールマン研究が始まり、ノグチ研究もかなり深められた。これにより、両者にはある接点があったことが明らかになった。1903年、コールマンはロンドンで The Green Sheaf という小雑誌を創刊し自ら編集長を務めたが、その雑誌にノグチの「The Violet」、「Evening」、「Mugen」という三篇の英詩が掲載されているのである。本稿では、この事実から、今まで論じられることのなかったノグチが The Green Sheaf 誌に詩を投稿した経緯や理由、またその投稿が両者にとってどのような意義があったのかを考察する。 | |||||||||||

| 内容記述 | Modernist painter Pamela Colman Smith (1878-1951) and poet Yone Noguchi, or Yonejiro Noguchi (1875-1947) lived in roughly the same generation and both experienced two world wars. Neither is the type of artist to be found in textbooks. Colman’s name is most known in occult circles as “the tarot card painter.” Noguchi is regarded for his short tenure as a known “international poet” in Japan, America, and England. At the turn of the twenty-first century, Colman began to attract rejuvenated cultural and literary attention, and studies of Noguchi deepened considerably. This renewed interest has indicated the two shared a connection. In 1903, Colman founded the small magazine, The Green Sheaf, in London. The Green Sheaf subsequently published three of Noguchi’s English poems, “The Violet,” “Evening,” and “Mugen.” This paper will discuss how and why Noguchi submitted his poems to The Green Sheaf, along with the significance of the poems’ submission and publication held for both Colman and Noguchi. |
