内容記述 The Guildhall School of Music and Drama of the London City is very strong in outreach education. Launched as an elective subject in the year 1984, it was established as a compulsory to all the students of the School of Music in 1994. The section for outreach education was enlarged in 2002 to be an independent department, named Professional Development Department, along with Composition Department, Piano Department etc. In addition it was expanded to have its Master Course for a degree of MMA in Leadership in 2004. Undergraduate students study 'Creating and Communicating Music 1' in their first year and they should experience performances in at least two different contexts of community, for example at schools, hospitals and community centres. Then they take 'Professional Practice 1' in the third year, 'Professional Practice 2' and 'Independent Performance Project' in the fourth and last year. Graduate students are 'encouraged to identify a personal pathway of professional development in artistic leadership, composition, performance and/or as a practising artist in a variety of community, trans-cultural or cross-arts settings' (quoted from Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Prospectus 2006, p.52). In order to make such an education possible to all the students, many kinds of collaborations with different kinds of organisations are prepared. They include 'Connect', 'Note to Note', 'Chamber Tots at Wigmore Hall', 'Healthcare', 'Special Needs', 'Prisons', 'Map/making', 'Open Call', 'Contemporary Ensembles' and others. The characteristics of its education are as follows: 1) special emphasis on composition and creation of music, 2) on improvisation, 3) on ensemble and collaboration. In general it aims to foster musicians who can work as leaders in collective creation of music in the future society. It should be discussed whether the Kobe College should make a model of the Guildhall in their totality and integrity of the outreach education, or another type, for example of the Juilliard School of Music, New York, where students are awarded with scholarships, if they accomplish all the requirements in their outreach activities.
