内容記述 | The School of Music, Kobe College, is celebrating its centenary this year, 2006. The present essay aims to investigate its development by an examination of the Equipment Records kept in the Accounting Division of the College. In a concert critique in the April 1958 issue of the music journal Ongaku-no-Tomo, we find a remark saying that most pianos have been replaced at Kobe College after Hara Chieko (1914-2001) accepted the professorship of Piano at the College (April 1957). Is this true? If we can trace the purchase history of musical instruments, it will contribute to a better understanding of the development of music education at the College. That was how this research started. By examining the second volume of the Equipment Records, the following facts have been brought to light : 1) there were seven grand pianos and eighteen uprights in 1939, 2) ten uprights were donated by the Japan Mission in 1949, 3) fourteen pianos were replaced in five years form 1954 to 1958, 4) very exceptionally, six new grands and six new uprights were purchased while eight old uprights were sold all at once in April 1959, 5) a cycle of piano replacement seems to have been fixed after 1962. In the great replacement in 1959, all the existing old pianos, bought in 1924, 1926, 1934, 1937 and 1949, were got rid of. At the same time the proportion of grands to uprights increased sharply. This can be interpreted as related to the basic change in the view of music education at the College : from music as a way to sophistication and grace toward music as a professional activity. Hara was teaching at Kobe College from April 1957 until her departure for Italy in December 1958. It is unknown where the three new pianos acquired in October 1957 were placed, but they were undoubtedly among the ones referred to in the critique mentioned above. With the approval by the Board of Trustees in January 1959, twelve new pianos were purchased in the following April. Although Hara had already left Japan at that time, these pianos were left behind as her mementos to the School of Music. | |||||
