| 内容記述 | 本論文は19世紀英国女流作家ジョージ・エリオット(1819-1880)の共感概念を、18世紀スコットランドの哲学者（経済学者)アダム・スミス(1723-1790)の『道徳感情論』(1759)を手掛かりに分析し、その芸術的倫理的意義を考察するものである。方法として、エリオットの前期から後期の主要作品に描かれる登場人物たちの共感の行為を『道徳感情論』における同感論を用いて分析し、影響関係と、両者の共感概念の相違点を詳細なテクスト分析によって明らかにする。 This thesis examines George Eliot's conception of sympathy by conducting a close textural analysis of her demonstration of the mechanisms of sympathy, mainly referring to the system of sympathy as defined by Adam Smith, the eighteenth century British economist and moral philosopher. Though she repeatedly demonstrates the realistic limitation of the power of sympathy and the difficulty of the all-consuming process of the act of sympathy, Eliot must have believed its small but influential power to make people morally good, which proves that she overcomes Smith's system. |
