| 内容記述 | 本稿はアメリカン・ボード宣教師文書の内、音楽教師エリザベス・タレー Elizabeth Torrey (1848～1921、常勤在任1896～1909）の書簡を解読することによって、当時の音楽教育の一端を明らかにすることを目的とする。タレーは1890年に来日し、始め新潟、次に大阪の梅花女学校で教えた後、1894年から非常勤講師、1896年からは常勤講師として神戸女学院で音楽教師を務め、1906年に音楽科を創設したことで知られる。タレーがアメリカン・ボードに書き送った書簡は在日20年間に21通と少ないが、そこにはタレーが熱心に取り組んでいたトニック・ソルファ教育に関わる記述が含まれている。すなわち書簡の記述から、タレーは1892年に四国今治の教会での6週間の「短期コース」でトニック・ソルファ教授法を習得し、掛図の作成を行ったこと、梅花女学校で徹底した指導を行って（批判もあったものの）成果を上げていたこと、1898年と1902年の2回、トニック・ソルファ版の『教会讃美歌集 Church Praise Book 』（ビッグロウ＆メイン社、初版 1881）を100部づつ出版社と教会の協力を得てアメリカから取り寄せて神戸女学院の学生の教材としたことが浮かび上がってきた。さらに本学図書館にはこのトニック・ソルファ版『教会讃美歌集』（ビッグロウ＆メイン社、1888）が1冊現存し、そこには「Walter Cary, Kyoto, from Miss Torrey, Sept. 15. 1894」という書込みが残されていることも判明した。このように明治期の神戸女学院の音楽教育においては、トニック・ソルファの掛図とトニック・ソルファ版『教会讃美歌集』が大きな役割を果たしていたことがこれらの書簡から明らかになった。 | |||||||||||

| 内容記述 | This paper aims to survey the music education of Kobe College in the Meiji Era, through reading of twenty-one letters by Elizabeth Torrey (1848-1921, music teacher of Kobe College in 1896-1909), sent to the American Board from 1890 to 1909. Elizabeth Torrey arrived to Japan in 1890, and after staying in Niigata and teaching at Baikwa Girls' School in Osaka, she taught music in Kobe College at first as part time teacher from 1894, and then as permanent teacher from 1896 to 1909. The main interest of her letters concerns the Tonic Sol-fa Method, which she used enthusiastically and systematically in her music education. One of her letters tells us that she learned this method in 1892 when she visited Imabari, Ehime Prefecture, in Shikoku Island, at the invitation of a church (possibly the Imabari Church founded in 1879). In 1898 and 1902, she asked the American publisher, Biglow＆Main, to arrange to send a hundred copies of Church Praise Book in the Tonic Sol-fa edition, first published in 1881, for the use of Kobe College students. The publisher was so kind to donate the books to the School. My research this time has made it clear that the Kobe College Library possesses a copy of this Church Praise Book in the Tonic Sol-fa edition of 1888, and this book has an inscription, 'Walter Cary, Kyoto, from Miss Torrey, Sep. 15. 1894,' seemingly written with her own hand. Thus the reading of Torrey's letters leads us to the understanding that this Church Praise Book of Biglow ＆ Main was the main teaching material in her Tonic Sol-fa education, with Tonic Sol-fa wall charts, which have been also kept in the Kobe College Library. |
